my true calling
Last Saturday night, my colleague Susan Owens, delivered a beautiful homily on the call of Christian leadership. Her text was Jesus confrontation with Peter recorded in John 21. In this encounter, Jesus asks Peter three times if he loves Jesus. Three times Peter acknowledges his love, and three times Peter is called to care for Jesus’ sheep.
I had heard the text before. In fact, for this event, I had chosen the text and the topic for her reflection. But as she retold the story and reflected on its significance, I knew that this text was still living and active and speaking.
First is was speaking generally to all those engaged in Christian leadership. We demonstrate our love for Christ by feeding Christ’s sheep. It is not our class, or our small group or our congregation. They are Christ’s sheep, and my service to feed them is an expression of my love for Christ.
Secondly the text was speaking to me personally. In that moment, I felt like I knew who I was with sparkling clarity. I am called to feed sheep. That is who I am. My Children, My wife, My boss, My co workers, My neighbors, are Christ’s and I am called to serve them, and feed them. And I am called to be fed.
It was a startling moment. I know and believe that God’s word in living and active. I teach it in many settings. But when God’s word acts on one heart, it is startling nevertheless.
Do you love Jesus? Feed his sheep.
