playgrounds and old tires 8

This is the final post in this series, because next week we start a new sermon series on Finances called “Get a Grip.” But before moving on I have one parting thought about recycling.

These days it is hip to recycle and so manufacturers usually mention if they make a product from recycled materials. Somewhere on the package it might say, “This product made from 30% recycled products.”

I think that I need to live my life with a disclaimer like that. Somehow I feel like I generally live trying to give the impression that I am not in need of recycling and have never been recycled. On the contrary I know that God is working hard to reshape my life and there is a lot of work left to do.

When Christians like me wear a mask of perfection and deny our pasts, we unwittingly cut others off from the grace of God.

I am aware that other have the opposite problem. They seem to only want to talk about their past. They live in the glorious memory of their past sin and want to tell the glamorous story of their evil as a way to impress others. I think that the balance must be something like this: “That is who I was, this is who I am, and I long for who I will one day be, Praise be to God.”

I want to get a sticker to wear on my shirt, “Recycling in Progress. This product currently made from X% recycled materials, but it will soon be 100%, thanks be to God.”

on the walk
