why i choose death

Introducing my children to lots of foods is important to my wife and me. We want our kids to be flexible and healthy eaters. Fortunately we have lots of people helping us. Some of our biggest helpers are my niece and nephew Leigh and Lane. My sister-in-law is Korean and so their family has helped us introduce our kids to lots of new foods. My youngest’s favorite food right now is squid. Now I don’t mind squid but he didn’t learn to love squid from me. He learned to love it from his 7 year-old niece.

In fact I often have trouble introducing him to new foods. Recently I found myself trying to convince him to try a new dessert. Continue Reading »

walk this way

Published by Ethan Magness under Uncategorized

For our second sermon in the the Around the Word series Ben was back to cover the law and the founding of the nation. If you missed it, I hope that you will follow the link and listen to it, but if you heard you know that he reminded us that God’s way is designed out of love to lead us to life. It is a different and unique way to live that is given to us for our good. Giving us a law is not a cruel joke on us but rather a blessing. There are other ways to live, but none of them lead to life. Continue Reading »

who are you?

Published by Ethan Magness under Uncategorized

Micheal Spencer suggests that you are a person for whom Christ died.

You are also a person that God created.

That is some pretty special credentials.

I may need to add that to my resume.

i want to be part of that

Greg Boyd is talking about the renewed relevance of the Menonite tradition. (He is right about that IMHO) As the the lead in to that he describes something he sees happening in the church. Read on to see what he says. (you can follow the link to read the paragraph in context.)

There is a beautiful and powerful grassroots Kingdom movement arising all over the globe that Mennonites in particular need to notice. Millions of people are abandoning the Christendom paradigm of the traditional Christian faith in order to become more authentic followers of Jesus. Continue Reading »

I got to preach on Genesis this last Sunday. This prompted the following question.Think about your own answer before you read my reflections.

the shack

Published by Ethan Magness under Uncategorized

Wow.

My wife gave it to me after someone gave it to her. I read the pull-quotes on the cover. They were a bit too over the top. I almost put it down. Eugene Peterson thinks that this book will be as important as Pilgrims Progress. Puleease.

But my wife has pretty good taste and she compared it to Lewis in The Great Divorce which is still pretty high Continue Reading »

around the word

Published by Ethan Magness under Uncategorized

We began a new series at Mountain this week. We are traveling “Around the Word in 80 Days.” In this series we are taking a balloons-eye view of the Bible. We want people to be equipped to study scripture, and to be empowered by having a good idea of what they will find in its pages. I am excited about the series. I have a lot of faith in God’s ability to work through scripture. I think that the Bible is a remarkable book and the story it tells is the most important story in the world. Continue Reading »

the worst thing about sin

Published by Ethan Magness under Uncategorized

I have been doing some reading lately about sin. Sin is not a happy topic for reading, but it continues to be a relevant topic for my life so I read about it occasionally. Much of what I have read has prompted me to reflect that the really troubling thing about sin is that is separates us from God. Even more troubling is that we often compound this by assuming that God is okay with that. Continue Reading »

francis chan and prophets

Published by Ethan Magness under BlogWatch

I have become a fan of Francis Chan since I discovered him while wondering You Tube. Here is another comment from him on the need to be prophetic. I also like the whole idea of a video blog.

Check him out for yourself.

love songs for Jesus

Published by Ethan Magness under Uncategorized

I commented a while back on a John Stackhouses concern about songs that sing about being “in love” with Jesus. You can find my comments and a link to his here.

I mention this because I have been laughing today about this satirical take on the issues of romantic language being borrowed for Christian worship. Gotta Love Lark News.
